AJSS Special Issue Vol 1.

The Amsterdam Journal of Social Sciences (AJSS) didn’t begin with an institutional plan or top-down initiative, it started with frustration and ambition. A group of students, frustrated after being denied the opportunity to publish their own research, decided to create the kind of space they wished had existed for them. What followed was an entirely grassroots effort: a journal by students, for students.

What began as a simple idea grew quickly. With a shared drive to amplify student voices and showcase the incredible range of work coming out of social science classrooms, the team pushed forward. Eventually, the University of Amsterdam took notice, and AJSS secured institutional support. That support allowed the project to flourish, while the core remained rooted in student initiative and editorial independence. Fast-forward two years, and we’ve hit an exciting landmark. This is our first-ever printed edition, a tangible product that reflects the energy, dedication, and talent of everyone involved. Within these pages are the first seven articles we published this year, selected not just for their quality, but for how they reflect the intellectual diversity and curiosity of students working across disciplines.

AJSS has grown into more than a journal, it’s a platform, a training ground, and a statement. It shows what students are capable of when given the tools and trust to build something of their own. This print edition is just one step in our journey, but it feels like a big one. We’re proud to share it with you.
