Board Vacancies 2025-2026

The Amsterdam Journal of Social Sciences (AJSS) is a student-led journal affiliated with the University of Amsterdam. We aim to provide an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary debates in Social Science. Our mission is to ensure a platform for students to publish their work, exchange ideas, and be part of an academic community. To keep on doing so, the AJSS is looking for enthusiastic students who want to be part of a student-led journal in the following academic year, 2025 - 2026


In the board, we are looking for a new Co- chair, Editor-in-chief (and co-chair) a Treasurer, a Secretary, and an Community organizer. The AJSS board works to represent the organization in public settings, secure funding, coordinate between the different teams, and ensure that we serve our members by making academia more accessible.


To be part of the board you can send in a short (max 300 words) letter of motivation to ajss@uva.nl, detailing potential relevant previous experience and why you are want to be part of the board. Please make sure to specify which role(s) you are most interested in (see role descriptions below).


Open Roles


Co- Chair

Your primary responsibility is to lead the Board and oversee the strategic direction of the journal. To do so, you act as the main representative of the journal to faculty, students, and external partners. You should also be working to ensure that there is a good collaboration across the editorial, and events teams. Ultimately, to promote the growth and engagement of the journal.


Editor-in-Chief (and co-chair)

You will be responsible for coordinating the editorial team (see the editorial team vacancy for more detailed responsibilities). You should also communicate the progress, and process of the editorial team to the board. As co-chair you occasionally assist the other Co-chair in their representational work.


Secretary

Your primary function is to organize and facilitate board meetings. To do so, you manage internal communications and maintain records of board meetings. You should also organize board documentation and ensure accessibility for all members. Finally, you also support the Co-Chairs, and other board members with administrative tasks as needed.


Treasurer

Your main responsibility is to make a budget proposal for the academic year, ensure that the budget is followed by recording costs continuously, and preparing a budget proposal at the end of each year. This role does not require significant previous experience in treasury as long as you have interest and curiosity about how university funding works, and organized and structured approach.


Community Organizer

You will work to plan and execute events, like workshops, promotional activities, borrels, and teambuilding events. To do so, you need to coordinate logistics such as venue booking, catering, and partnership management. Ultimately, this should help grow the journal's visibility within the UvA's network.
