Unveiling the Collective Shadow: A Deep Dive into Romania's 2024 Political Transformation

Matei Soare

Abstract:

This paper examines contemporary Romanian politics through the lens of historical factors influencing the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. The central research question investigates how Romania's collective shadow, rooted in its authoritarian past, affects public perception and behaviour during this electoral period. The analysis posits that the unexpected success of far-right candidate Călin Georgescu reflects unresolved societal issues stemming from Romania's history, particularly its communist regime. The study begins by defining the concept of the collective shadow, drawing on Jungian theories of the shadow archetype and collective unconscious. It then provides a historical overview of Romania's fascist and communist eras, highlighting how authoritarian practices shaped a culture of fear and mistrust among citizens. This context is crucial for understanding the resurgence of nationalist sentiments and the political landscape leading up to the 2024 elections. Subsequent sections explore socio-political factors contributing to the current electoral dynamics, including media narratives and public sentiment. The paper argues that the collective shadow manifests in harmful societal trends and influences voter behaviour, revealing deep-seated fears and desires that have shaped electoral outcomes. Ultimately, this analysis aims to illuminate the complexities of Romanian identity as it grapples with its past while navigating a pivotal moment in its democratic evolution. By integrating historical insights with contemporary political analysis, this research provides a nuanced understanding of the forces at play in Romania's 2024 elections, emphasising the importance of acknowledging and addressing the collective shadow in shaping future political trajectories.
