Abstract:
This thesis illustrates how Palestinian women in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) use music to express resistance to the Israeli occupation. The thesis seeks to contextualize Palestinian resistance in the circumstances imposed by the occupation, which violate international legal frameworks. An interdisciplinary approach is adopted to highlight the legal obligations on Israel as a state as well as an Occupying Power and its inability to abide by these legal standards. The first question posed explores the themes of resistance articulated by Palestinian women in their songs. A thematic analysis was conducted on 11 songs performed by Palestinian women from Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The songs highlighted three predominant themes: strategic displays of resistance, the politicization of homeland and attachment to Palestine. Afterwards, a doctrinal analysis outlined the main legal frameworks in International Law which should protect Palestinian women. The analysis found that these legal frameworks are not upheld by Israel in the occupied territory, thus prompting Palestinian resistance. This thesis demonstrates the importance of music as an outlet of political expression and resistance to occupation and oppression.
